There is no way I could ever relate to having my child in Iraq...I will keep you both in my prayers.
If you're having trouble drawing your son, try drawing a grid on both the reference photo and your drawing paper. This is a good way for someone just starting out to get the features aligned correctly...and the right size. My next tip would be to focus on the shadow shapes...gradually building them until the values are accurate. Take your time and relish the process, I know you'll to fine.
